After the Haitian earthquake of January 0f 2010, the Obama administration granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for those living illegally in the United States that were from Haiti.  This even applied to those in removal proceedings.  This helped approximately 100,000 people.  TPS was initially granted for 18 months.  Since then TPS has been extended several times.

Do to conditions in Haiti; the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has once again extended the re-registration deadline for (TPS) for Haitians. The deadline was extended from May 2, 2014 to July 22, 2014.    Once re-registered, the TPS will be extended by 18 moths from July 23, 2014 to January, 22 2016.   Work authorization has also been extended six month to January 22, 2015.

To be eligible you must have already been a Haitian that was granted TPS and have resided continuously in the U.S. since January 12, 2011.   About 51,000 people should meet these requirements.

To re-register, TPS beneficiaries must submit Form I-821, Application for Temporary Protected Status, and Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization. Individuals seeking to re-register do not need to pay the Form I-821 application fee. However, all re-registrants 14 years of age and older must pay a biometric services fee or submit a fee waiver request. All re-registrants seeking employment authorization through Jan. 22, 2016, must also submit the Form I-765 fee (or a fee-waiver request). Re-registrants who do not want employment authorization must still submit a completed Form I-765 but do not need to submit the I-765 fee. Failure to submit the required filing fees or a properly documented fee-waiver request will result in the rejection of the re-registration application.

A notice posted in the Federal Register contains more details on the re-registration period’s extension.
